Overcoming technical and economic hurdles in the treatment of wastewater from industrial cooling plants:
The treatment and desalination of technical process water and the reuse of the treated water is initially technically implementable without further problems. In practice, conventional treatment plants require a large amount of space due to the combination of several treatment stages (e.g. buffer tank/ pressure boosting/ (flocculation)/ filtration/ pressure boosting/ ultrafiltration/ reverse osmosis) and are often uneconomical and complex to operate due to the high investment costs. The challenge in the treatment and reuse of the effluent from cooling systems lies in the sometimes very different water quality, impurities and the proportion of solid particles.
INWATEC therefore combines two things with its experience. On the one hand, the chemical treatment of the cooling water is already adapted to the treatment of the cooling water effluent in a membrane plant. On the other hand, the plants can be connected inline to the cooling plant, in that the network pressure is already sufficient for the operation of the plant and/or an inline booster pump is connected directly to the cooling water network. Due to the pressure filtration systems used for fine filtration of the water, no buffer tanks and further booster systems are necessary, so that the design of the systems is very space-saving with low operating costs. Depending on the solids load of the water, membrane modules can also be used for desalination, which allow higher particle loads and particle sizes with continuous operation. In addition to the space-saving installation, this means that the usually very expensive ultrafiltration and/or further filtration stages can be dispensed with – often a game changer in terms of economic efficiency and operational stability.
The investment remains a barrier? As a rule, INWATEC operates the plants for cooling water recycling as a contracting model. This eliminates the investment risk for the operator and the technical advantages including the savings potential can be realized from the first hour of operation.
